Lil' Lady Ruby Red

Take a look at this little cutie pie!! Everyone, please meet the newest member of our family, Ruby!

We picked her up this afternoon and the children have been loving on her ever since. She's an 8 week old Golden Retriever . . . so sweet!! I know you are all thinking I am probably crazy for getting a puppy with 4 children - one of them just 6 weeks old, but what can I say, I am a true animal lover. Ever since we had to put my dog to sleep I have been wanting to get a puppy. Life is so much fuller and more fun with a cuddly pet!! :)

So, I'll keep you posted on Ruby's progress, I have a feeling we'll be in for a few sleepless nights. Any puppy training tips for all you wonderful people out there??

Happy Father's Day to all the great dads - especially mine! my fabulous husband and my father-in-law!

  1. Congratulations to you and your family on your new puppy! A friend of ours has a new puppy and they named her Ruby as well. Love the name Ruby for a dog!!!
A lot of work ahead with a newborn and puppy, but we too are animal lovers so I can understand!

  2. Julie...It'll be three weeks for us with our new little Beagle, Suzy! She was 3 months when we got her and training has been interesting to say the least...

With our older beagle, Daphne, we put a bell by the door and every time we took her out, we took her paw and had her ring the bell. Then, she learned to ring it on her own and EVERY time she rang it, we took her outside. She eventually learned that to go potty, ring the bell. Then, she trained us that everytime she wanted attention, ring the bell...But she was trained by then and we knew that look in her eye that she needed to go!

Hope this helps cause it's NOT with our new dog!!!! She's either a little slower or too stubborn!!!

    Blessings!
    Lisa

  4. She's adorable Julie!! I know you all will have so much fun with her!! It's always so much fun to watch the relationship between kids and pets blossom!

I have no good tips though...we kinda muddled through with our Maisy dog, but she turned out ok. I guess one tip is take her out in public someplace EVERY week, so she gets used to crowds (well...at least groups of people...I know it's hard to find big crowds there in Waterboro!! ;-)

    Huggs,

  5. Ruby is too cut!!! I agree with Lisa, I trained my cocker spaniel to ring a bell when he needs to go out (ironically, the cat has begun modelling the behavior when she wants to go out and eat the grass...). Another tidbit I learned is to crate train your dog! From the first week, have the dog kenneled at night and anytime the entire family leaves. You can put a towel or sheet in the cage with some toys, and she'll start to realize it's her "home". This way she won't demolish your house when you aren't there...and she won't be waking everyone up at night roaming around. Best of luck!! Enjoy the first year...she'll be HUGE before you know it!!! :-)

  7. She is too cute!
You are a brave woman, I don't think I could do a newborn and a puppy!

  8. Julie - You certainly are brave, but if you have to get up at night, it's good to get more than one thing accomplished. After babies, my second favorite (excluding two growing grandaughters) is PUPPIES!!! We always used a constant phrase when taking them out to "water" and ours was "Hurry up!! Quick!!" so throughout their lives, they knew what was expected of them. Ours were Shelties and good listeners. Hey, that Jana has a lot of nerve putting it out there that Waterboro might be a small town, when she is NOT planning on coming to Maine this summer!!!

  9. Ruby is absolutely adorable! With 4 kids she will definitely not lack for love and attention....how fun! We always had one or two furry friends when my kids were home and now have just one. My grandkids just love playing with her too. Good luck wih the training!

  10. First of all, you're NOT crazy! I think right now is the best time to get one that way the kids can grow up with her! She is so super adorable! Hope the kids have lots of fun with her! Absolutely love her name too!

  11. Congrats!
My advice would be to absolutely crate train her. It is a definate must!
I currently have a 9 1/2 yr old chocolate female lab, (Cocoa), a 1 1/2 yr old black female lab, (Ebony), who just gave birth to her first liter of puppies on Mother's Day, her 3 puppies will be 6 weeks old this Sunday. Then in 2 weeks they will go to their new homes except for 1 that we are keeping for my son.

  13. Awwwww! What a gorgeous little girl! I am a HUGE sucker for puppies...yup, we had two cats and an 8 year old dog and I just INSISTED we get a puppy...In January we got the cutest little Sheba Inu male pup...(our other is a female Sheba Inu). He was possibly the cutest puppy I had ever seen...and good thing to! It kept him alive when he piddled in the house for the first two months. (Our first dog took all of two weeks to potty train, so I was NOT prepared for his "lack of control" so to speak.) He is now 6 months old and READY to be neutered...but the vet won't do it for another month...I am not sure I can survive his antics for that long...let me rephrase that...I am not sure HE can survive...(Just kidding, I would NEVER harm an animal.)

My best advice is to be consistant...in everything! Everyone in the house has to deal with the pup the same way. (My hubby likes puppy kisses and I don't...what do you think the puppy does???)

Oh, and have a water bottle handy at all times!
