Yard Sale Finds

Happy Labor Day!! We don't have any big plans but it's a gorgeous day here so I'm sure we'll find something to do! :)

Remember tonight is Stamping In Your Jammies over in the Paper Pretties Forum! The party starts at 8 pm and I'd love to see you there! Christie will be announcing the newest Cutie Pie and there may even be a few surprises! :)

I had a chance to stop at a few yard sales on Saturday - LOVE doing that but I don't get much of a chance these days. I found some neat things I thought I'd share.

First is this awesome windsor chair! Ever since we had our kitchen table custom made by a friend of ours I have been wanting to get the perfect chair for the end - "Daddy's seat." We only needed one since the other seating is a built in bench and a free standing bench. I found this at a yard sale for $5!!! It does have 1 broken rung as you can see but I think I can have that fixed. I LOVE this chair!! It's comfy and the perfect compliment for our farmhouse kitchen table!

I found these 2 baskets for $.50 each - score!! I thought they looked the right size for CD cases and they are - perfect storage now for my Papertrey sets!! The Sugar box was a whole $1 - I'm sure I'll find the perfect thing to store in there soon! :)

This cute set of travel bags was just $2 - won't it be perfect for cruising?!

I have always wanted to buy a cast iron pan and when I saw this square one I knew that was it!! $2 - can you beat it? It's clean and not a bit of rust! Now I need to figure out if I should season it, how I go about that and where I can find an awesome cornbread recipe . . . anyone??

Finally, this baby was another $2 purchase. The woman was selling a bunch of cd's and this was holding them. She seemed surprised when I asked if she was selling the box and said, ok $2? SOLD! :) I may move the PTI sets here and find another use for the baskets, isn't it nice to have options?!

I'm hoping to go to a few more sales today. I'm totally inspired now to find all kinds of neat "junk" to house all my "stuff"!! :) Have a great day everyone!!

  4. You cast iron pan looks seasoned already! They are all I cook in!If you don't think it is, just rub crisco all over it and stick it in the oven. Never put soap on it!
Just a little scrub with hot water!
Also Food network has a lot of cornbread recipes. But a box of Jiffy cornbread mix is a lot of Southerners favorite! Not sure if you can get it in Maine though. Let us know what you cook!

  5. Hi Julie....You found some AWESOME items for organizing your 'stuff'! I love cast iron, and have used it all my life. I agree with what Ree said for seasoning...light coat of oil, put in a warm oven (low setting) for a few hours or overnight. Take it out and begin using it. After cooking with it, just wipe clean--don't use soap or harsh scrubbing pads.....but if you feel that you HAVE to use something harsh to clean it, be sure to re-season it again. Another thing I've always done, after cooking in them and then rinsing clean, I was taught to always re-coat with another thin coat of oil...I usually put a little oil on a napkin and swipe it over the pan, and then leave it on my stove-top. As for the cornbread recepe....now, that is where I differ a bit. I grew up in the deep south, and we didn't use Jiffy cornbread mix because it is a 'sweet' cornbread. Most of my family and friends don't eat sweet cornbread. We use a mixture of cornflower and regular flour....a 3:1 ratio. If you would like to try my recipe, let me know and I'll email you the recipe. Good luck with your cast iron cooking, I think you will really enjoy it.

  6. I am a cast iron person too. And I use Jiffy...mainly cause when we go camping its uber easy to pack for. Cept I add a small can of corn to mine.

As far as rust on your castiron...just scrub it real well and reseason it. You seriously cannot RUIN the stuff.

A great way to clean sticky stuff out of them is just to put it back on the stove with water in it. Bring it to a boil and use a wooden spoon to keep stirring the water and prying up the food.

I use soap on mine, but I know that some freak out at this...and thats ok too. Just means I have to season it more often is all.

    But seasoning is a breeze.

Your other finds are awesome!!! Have fun with them!

  7. great finds!! I concur with Barb G with the seasoning of the pan & about the Jif cornbread - that is our favorite! I put just a tad bit more sugar in it too - also while you are mixing the stuff, stick your pan in the oven with some salted butter to melt - then put the mix in to bake. YUMM-O

  8. I grew up in the south & I don't make sweet cornbread. Here is my recipe:
    1 cup self-rising cornmeal
    1 egg
1 TBSP oil (I use canola)
add milk or buttermilk (even better) until you get a consistency that you can pour into your pan (not too runny). If it gets too runny then add more cornmeal. Your consistency will be pourable but neither too runny or too grainy. Bake at 400 for 15 min. or until brown. Depending on the size of your pan you may want to double this recipe for a thicker bread. Also, I always spray a little Pam in my iron pan before I make cornbread. Makes it a whole lot easier to remove. Leftover bread is great with cold milk or for stuffing.

    Have fun using your pan!
